What do you want to be when you grow up?

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life.  When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.  I wrote down ‘happy’.  They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.

Why does it always have to be material things that you want to or have to become when you grow up? Instead of dreaming up to become a banker, broker, barrister, botanist or a baker, can we not think about that have a higher purpose, irrespective of the profession we choose?
