Emotional triggers worksheet is a way to inculcate coping skills to triggers that contribute to a problem or a challenge.

What are the Emotional Triggers?

Emotional triggers are stimuli that evoke certain responses from our brain. The triggers can be anything and everything – people, events, situations, places, opinions et al. – and when we encounter them, the responses are often anger, sadness, rage, anxiety, stress, fear, doubt and the like.

Our brain rationalizes these behaviors, and we tend to think that these are normal responses to these triggers.  Then you slowly fall into the vortex of negativity.

The emotional triggers can range from trivial to profound, and some justified and most others are not.

For example, you come home and open the fridge and do not find dinner. The first thought is about how inconsiderate your spouse is and that she/he always does this type of thing. Why can’t they think how hard you worked at your job and come home exhausted and cherish a warm dinner. Then you spiral into thinking that the relationship is not working and contemplate ending the relationship. Of course, this is an extreme thought out of a simple event. For all you know, your spouse/partner may be working even harder than you, and when she/he comes home, they may need the same nourishment that you were seeking.

How to Manage Emotional Triggers?

  • Understand and accept that your emotional triggers are causing or contributing to problems.
  • Try to identify the emotional triggers when they happen – at an elemental level in your body or as thought patterns in your brain.
  • If your response is negative emotions such as fear, anger, stress, sadness, rage, please think about what is the source of these triggers.
  • Choose what you want to do and how you wish to handle the feeling.
  • Take active measures to shift your emotional state.
